HBA is on a mission to partner with West Africans as they bring Godly, sustainable transformation to their communities

We envision people in rural West Africa physically, economically, and spiritually healthy as they are empowered to bring lasting change to their communities under the influence of God.

Our vision

We envision people in rural West Africa physically, economically, and spiritually healthy as they are empowered to bring lasting change to their communities under the influence of God.

  1. Develop  – We employ Community Health Evangelism, a Christ-Centered wholistic strategy that seamlessly integrates evangelism, discipleship, disease prevention, and community-owned development through the use of local resources.
  2. Partner – We solicit strategic funding and prayer support to address the needs of marginalized individuals such as trafficked or orphaned children, women, or those suffering from abuse and trauma.
  3. Launch – We prepare and guide short term teams to work with our African partners in CHE training, health screenings, and community development projects.

why we do what we do

our guiding beliefs

HBA is motivated to serve the communities of West Africa because of the love of Jesus. We believe God’s love for people knows no ethnic or cultural boundaries. (John 3:16-17) We put our faith into action by following God’s commands as revealed in scripture; specifically, “helping the least of these”. We believe that Jesus cares deeply for those who are trapped in cycles of physical and economic despair. (Matthew 25:40) While systems and strategies are important in the development of communities, we believe true transformation can only happen in an environment of hope. We celebrate the truth that with Jesus, no situation is hopeless! (1 Peter 1:3-5) We welcome everyone to share their resources and skills, regardless of faith background, to assist HBA in our partnership with West Africans as they work in the development of their communities.

People Matter

Our Values

God looks upon his creation with love and faithfully seeks to restore us to a state of good health emotionally, physically and spiritually and this reflects HBA’s perspective.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.  We believe in helping people to identify their problems and walking alongside them as they propose and implement solutions to those problems.

We believe in working with many different organizations and supporters to see the lives of individuals and their communities transformed.

Relationships are built on trust and trust is built on truth. We seek to remain transparent and honest as we work with our partners and supporters and expect the same from them in return.

We believe everyone is made in God’s image and is therefore highly valued and must be treated with dignity and respect.

where we started

History of HBA

Heartbeat for Africa (HBA) began with a vision given to Ed Harrow. In 2006, after 3 trips to Africa, Ed clearly felt God leading him to develop a non-profit foundation to reach out to individuals, churches and secular organizations to make a difference in the lives of people in Ghana and throughout West Africa. In October 2006, the founding officers: Ed Harrow, June Crawford, Dr. John Utz and Jeff Wesley, incorporated Heartbeat for Africa as a 501(c)3 non-profit in the state of Arizona. HBA initially worked with African partners in the area around Ho, Ghana to conduct medical clinics, build rainwater harvesting tanks, and solicit individual sponsors to provide monthly support for orphans. As the foundation gained more experience and the board grew to include both U.S. and Ghanaian directors, we expanded our scope of operations to more West African nations and adopted a development strategy called Community Health Evangelism (CHE) to guide our efforts. CHE concentrates efforts on long-term solutions that break the cycle of poverty and disease. Through CHE, we train, equip and empower people to do for themselves. We focus on development rather than relief and disease prevention rather than medical intervention. We are on a mission to partner with West Africans as they bring Godly, sustainable transformation to their homes and communities.
